Hi everyone -
First, thank you all for the huge outpouring of well-wishes, offers of help at home and prayers. We truly appreciate it.
This is a blog I never - ever - envisioned writing. But, here I go...
We learned, rather suddenly, Friday that Ali has a pretty serious heart condition. The term is dialated cardiomyopathy. In laymen's terms, it means part of her heart - in her case, the left ventricle - is enlarged and therefore cannot pump as effectively as it should. Alivia had been on a decline for about two weeks prior with what we thought was reflux and an upper respiratory infection. We also learned at her 6-month checkup that she had fallen off the weight curve. We assumed this was due to the reflux. Fortunately, her ped ordered a chest Xray to rule out other complications. The final report showed an enlarged heart. We started working on getting an echo scheduled for her. The earliest was Aug. 27, which was not quick enough, in our minds. So I began to get help at work (fortunately for us, I work at a hospital) and the ped's nurse began making calls on her own. I won the race, and thanks to some tremendous coworkers, we got Ali in that same day.
What happened after that is frankly a blur and a memory I don't want to relive. Doctors rushed in, calls got made, people from the ER showed up. The next thing we know, our daughter is suffering heart failure and needs to be in the cardiac ICU in St. Louis. They even talked about air lifting her, but once she proved to them that she was fairly stable, an ambulance from Children's Hospital came to get us. We got here around 8 or 9 on Friday night, went through another whirlwind of tests and so forth, and poor Ali got so many lines put into her, it was a harsh reality to face.
She's been stable as far as we understand. Some meds are helping her heart pump better so her body can rest, and we've used some diuretics to release excess fluid. She's breathing easier and finally beginning to eat better. She still gives us smiles and plays with her toes, and the docs are pleased to know she's met all her milestones (minus the weight thing).
We also are now learning that, while she compensated pretty well these past few months, there were signs we had noticed but didn't know where to pinpoint them, so it's like a big puzzle is coming together for us. This is why she's been grunting, not eating well, coughing so poorly and other small things. What we still don't know is why she has this - my guess is it's congenital - and where we go from here. It's going to be a long road. And while we don't want to be here, we are lucky to be where we are at, with great docs and nurses to care for our girl.
Tomorrow, she'll begin undergoing more invasive tests to seek answers to all of this and will need to be intubated for them. I ask that you keep praying for her, especially that she tolerates this testing and tubing tomorrow.
Thanks to all!
Kelsea - you are so strong and such an inspiration! Many, many people are praying for you...my entire church, for instance! I praise God that this was found in time and I pray that she'll be back to normal in no time! (((HUGS)))

The smile on her face in this picture is because she knows she's loved. My thoughts and prayers are with you and I know this can't be easy for you or your family, and I hope Alivia gets healthy and stays happy as quickly as possible. Stay healthy and sane yourself Kelsea!

Kelsey & Andrew, Please know that Alivia & your family are in our family's thoughts & prayers. Sounds like she's in the best place she can be right now.
ReplyDeleteWe have been there. Our baby was air lifted at 2 days old to Phoenix from Tucson for a heart problem. After multiple surgeries, she is now 7 years old and finally stable. Know that we are praying. This is a tough road to walk and while you are in the midst of it, it lasts forever. You will look back and think "that's all the time we were there?" but then you will see all the miracles you witnessed along the way and realize God was really busy. I pass on to you the verse I claimed for my daughter during her last and most dangerous surgery; Psalm 118:17. May this give you strength and courage facing the coming days.
ReplyDeleteWe got a text about Ali from Martha & Emil while we were coming back from vacation. It was a long, boring day of travel, so we used it to pray for all of you. We will keep those prayers going. Hoping you'll feel surrounded by God's love and asking Him to guide the doctors. Deb & Warren
ReplyDeleteYou and your family are definitely in my prayers, Kelsea.

You're each in my prayers that her heart will be healed and the doctors will know just what to do to make her all better. Keep us posted!

Hey Kelsea,
ReplyDeleteI am sending prayers and positive energy to you, the family and Ali. Try to be strong. You know, children are resilient and stronger than we give them credit for so hang in there and just give her lots of love.
Praying for your family, stay strong!
ReplyDeletePraying for you and your beautiful little girl! It is so devastating to have a sick child. I pray that God carries you through this time, that He gives you strength and peace and hope. That you are able to rest in Him. And that He performs miracles in the heart of your sweet baby. My mom had cardiomyopathy 19years ago, was given a ZERO percent chance of survival, my dad was told to go in to say good bye. My mom is fine and thriving. Will be praying that your sweet baby is another miracle
ReplyDeleteKelsea, we are praying for Alivia, you and your family in Kentucky as well. She is beautiful as is Tyler. How hard this must be but it sounds like you have the best of care for your beautiful baby girl! Lou Jane
