What a month. It's been challenging, to say the least. Despite how cute and perky she looks in this photo, our little rugrat has not had the best of summers (which is sad considering it's her FIRST summer!).
I've long suspected she's had reflux because of some signs of discomfort she's shown, especially since May or maybe even April. I now think she's had it all her life. Alivia isn't a spitter-upper, which is a typical sign of reflux, but she's not been comfy. And last week she began randomly vomiting and getting more and more unhappy ... and eating less and less.
So by the time her 6-month checkup came Tuesday, we were worried. She was clearly miserable (complicated by an upper respiratory infection). The alarm bells kind of sounded when we got there because we learned she was 4 ounces lighter than she was at her 4-month checkup. Looking back, the signs were there: she never finished a bottle a daycare anymore, ate smaller quantities at home, and hadn't visibly bulked up like she should have for a 6-month-old.
After an X-ray to rule out pneumonia, we are at least 90% sure she has significant reflux. We started meds right away, but it could take a week to know if they are effective. Frustrating, to say the least, especially when she's still struggling to eat enough each day, weak and generally not her happy self most of the day. She still shows signs of the happy baby she is, but we are anxiously waiting for her to get healthy.

Height - 26 inches (still in the 96th percentile, so she's at least growing)
Weight - 12 pounds (1st percentile. Ugh.)
We go back for a weigh-in Aug. 23. Until then, I hope we can fatten her up and help her feel better!

ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that you guys have had a tough summer with the sicknesses and reflux. Hopefully, some meds to help with the reflux will do the trick.

Kennedy has been under the 15% for weight since she was 3mo old. And the doctor says she doesnt see that changing anytime soon. Especially with Kennedys dislike for anything that is not chocolate chip pancakes. I worry constantly. I am hoping for you guys that they can cure the reflex with some meds so she becomes as comfortable as she is cute. As everyone has said to me and i will say to you - there are worse things then having a skinny child. Call me if you want to chat. Or vent, or just talk about life...
